Intro to Research Techniques

The second part of the 4:20+Research Technique is the 20+ ways to go about collecting the feedback and information you need as you complete the four research documents.

We’ve tried to make it easier for you by separating these techniques into four groups that correspond with the four research categories: your product, your prospect, your competitor and your brand or expert authority.

But keep in mind, just because we’ve included a particular technique under one category does not mean you won’t be able to use it to glean information or ideas for the other three.

Also, we’re sharing twenty different techniques here, plus a few bonus tactics using artificial intelligence applications. But that doesn’t mean that you have to use all twenty in your research. Or that you can’t add your own techniques to the list.

All projects will benefit from using some or most of these techniques. But some projects may not require keyword research or surveys or review mining or the other techniques, so pick and choose the ones that will help you get the information you need to start writing.
When will you know that you have enough to start? That’s a tough question to answer. Gary Bencivenga, who is often referred to as the greatest copywriter alive today, has recommended collecting about 7 times more information than you think you need. Another A-List Copywriter, John Forde, recently told us on The Copywriter Club Podcast that he collects just enough to get started, then when he gets stuck, he goes back for more. Others have said you know you have enough research when you can’t wait to get started writing. But in general, collect more than you think you will need. With a little experience, you’ll know when you have enough.
