Writers Write

This may be a dangerous thing to say in a copywriting course, but you can’t become a copywriter by taking a course. Even this course. Or by taking several courses. Likewise, you won’t become a copywriter if you read a few books about copywriting, or even by reading ALL the books on copywriting.

Learning does not make you a copywriter.

Copywriters write.

And the only way to become a copywriter is to write copy.

We can hear you saying, “But I don’t have a client yet. How can I write?” 

If you don’t have a client to write for, find one. If you can’t find one, write for yourself. Treat your business as your first client. Write a website. Write blog posts. Write a sales page for your services. Write social media posts and start sharing them. Start a newsletter and write a daily email. Think about what your prospects might want to see if they asked for examples of your work.

If you know your niche, you can write a couple of “spec” pieces of content or sales copy similar to what you might write for your actual clients when you finally have them. Choose a product in the marketplace and write copy for it. Choose a topic and write an article. Write an about page or a while paper. And practice what you learn in this course. Keep your copy simple, specific, and believable. Show AND tell. Demonstrate that you can write in multiple voices or one unique voice that clients love. There is no reason you can’t start writing today.

Copywriters write. Content writers write. Social media writers write. So make time now to write. Because it is the only way to learn how to do this thing. 

Step two of course, is to find someone to mentor you as you write. To give you feedback on what works and what doesn’t. To show you how to improve and think differently.
